The New Course

St Andrews & Fife

The New Course at St Andrews is a classic links challenge that often lives in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, the Old Course.

Designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris and opened in 1895, the New Course is anything but “new” and offers a traditional, strategic test of golf. Its undulating fairways, firm and fast greens, and deep revetted bunkers provide a pure links experience that demands accuracy and shot-making ability.

Positioned alongside the Old Course, the New Course enjoys a similar natural landscape, with rippling fairways and stunning views of St Andrews Bay. However, it is known for being slightly narrower and more defined, with gorse-lined fairways adding an extra element of difficulty. The layout rewards precision over power, making it a favourite among those who appreciate a well-thought-out approach to the game.

The New Course is a must-play for any golf enthusiast, delivering the same historic atmosphere and exceptional playing conditions as The Old Course. The New Course always holds back 50% of its tee times for ”walk on play”, so there’s always the opportunity to play a spontaneous round of golf in St Andrews with no pre-booking. This is perfect for golfers who are unsuccessful in The Old Course Ballot.
