The course is set on a narrow strip of links land between the old red sandstone deer park wall and the North Sea, offering stunning coastal views. Initially designed as a 15-hole layout, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1880 by Old Tom Morris. The layout features a distinctive stone wall, constructed in the early 19th century by prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars, which divides the course into two sections. The opening holes are set inland, while the remaining holes run alongside the rugged coastline, providing a classic links experience. The course has hosted numerous championships and is renowned for its challenging yet enjoyable play, complemented by a welcoming clubhouse atmosphere.
